When a boat has been damaged, the insurance company or the owner may request a survey to determine the extent of the damage and to recommend a course of repairs. The survey is specifically focused on the damage and its affect on the value of the vessel. A Casualty Investigation (in addition to a Damage Survey) is usually requested by the insurance company when the cause of the damage or loss is not clearly apparent or is in question.
